The former residence of Zhang Shiming - The former residence of Zhang Shiming was constructed from 1889,accomplished in 1906. It covers a total area of 4792m2, with the construction area of 6137m2, combined the traditional architecture atyle with the western in French Renaissance,the building is skillfully linked together, reflecting the owner's communication and connection with western society on economy, culture and art in the late 19th century. With grand halls, elegant decoration and unique style, it is honored to be the biggest cross-culture private residence in the south of China. It has more than separate rooms, including living rooms, halls, one story or multi stories buildings, studies and bedrooms. Each room has a unique style, yet is all harmonically connected with each other. Thousands of stones, wood and brick carving are applied to embellish the residence. The interior decoration, especially stone tracery windows, colored glass, and French slabs, are all skillfully constructed with superior workmanship, which enhances the western flavor of the residence.
Little Lotus Garden- Little Lotus Garden was built and owned by the richest local silk merchant from 1885. His eldest grandson accomplished the beautiful garden 40 years later. The whole villa consists of a family temple, a charity chamber and garden. The main part of the garden is a big lotus pond with Dongsheng Pavilion of Chinese and European architectural style built nearby.
Baijian Buildings- Baijian Buildings is situated in the northeast of the town,constructed along the old canal. It is said that these buildings were built for his servants by a minister in Ming Dynasty."Bai" means one hundred in Chinses and "Baijian Buildings" means the building group which has one hundred rooms.It was constructed along sinuous rivers with stone bridges connected, represented by its traditional black roofs and black walls as well as ancient portal gates and terraced streets. Especially from Lotus Bridge to Long Bridge, houses were neatly arranged along the river. White walls, green roofs, corridors, river banks, flower walls, volume doors, as well as flowing water and traveling boats incarnates unique water scenery in the south of China.Now, it is the best preserved residence along the river built in Ming Dynasty. It has a total length of more than 400 meters and a history of over 400 years.
Nanxun, founded at 1252 A.D, belongs to Huzhou in Zhejiang Province. It was regarded as a sample place where the ancient merchants and riches assembled, where small bridges and streams crisscross along the old streets and lanes, a place famous for the exquisite ancient gardens, the international buildings and abundant sceneries. Nanxun has the similarity with other ancient water towns in the south bank of the Yangtze River in its typical scenery of small bridges, small rivulets and cottages set up by the water, age-old bridges and houses, popular names from historical classics. However, the difference, the uniqueness and the charm of Nanxun is that you can taste the fashion of the past years while being fully soaked in tradition. When Shanghai was far from being flourishing, in this small town one century ago, there were already buildings combining the East and the West styles, and lives of aristocratic lifestyle. This is the real attraction and the secret of its popularity of Nanxun. There are 3 national historical sites. The Jiaye Libraryˇ˘Xiaolianzhuang Lotus Villa and the Former Residence of Zhang Shiming.
